[ClickPress, Fri Mar 17 2006] New Englanders are embracing the newest way to easily make a difference in the environment by recycling printer cartridges. The increased visibility of the international franchise sensation Cartridge World has individuals and small businesses across the region taking advantage of saving through recycling.

EDITOR’S NOTE:

PLEASE CALL FOR AN INTERVIEW WITH DAN SCHEERER, MASTER FRANCHISEE OF CARTRIDGE WORLD NEW ENGLAND OR WITH BUSINESS OWNERS, ORGANIZATIONS AND SCHOOLS THAT TAKE ADVANTAGE OF RECYCLING CARTRIDGES IN YOUR AREA.

The need for this type of business is seen in a daunting statistic: only 27% of the cartridges in the USA are re-filled. The rest are disposed of. Also:

· It takes about a gallon of oil to make a new laser cartridge.

· Almost 8 cartridges are thrown away per second in the United States alone!

· In North America alone, over 350 million cartridges per year are discarded in our landfills, and that number increases by 12 percent annually. Right now, that’s about 70 percent of all cartridges used.

· A laser cartridge thrown into landfill can take up to 450 years to decompose. Some components made of industrial grade plastics will take over a thousand years to decompose.

· Every remanufactured cartridge saves nearly 3 and 1/2 pounds of solid waste from being deposited in landfills.

· Remanufacturing cartridges reduces pollution. Almost 90% of empty cartridges are incinerated or dumped in landfills.

· In one year, if the world’s discarded cartridges were stacked end-to-end, they would circle the earth over three times.

These are walk-in locations where you can bring a laser cartridge, have it refilled and walk out with either a recycled cartridge or a new one that will be recycled later – and know that as an end user you benefit in two ways: (1) price – these are typically 50% less than other commercial applications; and (2) you are assisting with the environment. The locations also offer pick and delivery services for businesses and organizations.

Cartridge World is a leader in inkjet and cartridge refilling and one of the world’s fastest growing franchises with locations that span across four continents and more than 1,100 locations worldwide. Cartridge World opened its United States location in January 2003, and now has over 300 open locations across America. They will open their 500th location in America within the year and it could potentially be one of the new Cambridge locations.
