It has been recently reported that the number of TB cases in England, Wales and Northern Island has risen to 7 000 in the last year (Health Protection Agency). Now, a new book charts this rise and challenges accepted epidemiology of tuberculosis in the UK.
[ClickPress, Thu Mar 23 2006] Tuberculosis in the UK, a tale of two nations (1905237-53-7). Published April 3rd 2006. This is the first modern book in English to challenge the accepted epidemiology of tuberculosis (TB).
Surinder Bakhshi’s research suggests that birth rate is the key to the fall and rise of tuberculosis in any population. As a result, the disease will be eliminated in 94 per cent of the UK population towards the end of the first quarter of this century. Its decline and eventual elimination is irreversible. However, the increase in immigrants from the African Horn and Southern Africa (areas with the highest level of unstable TB) have led to the reported increase in TB in the UK.
'Tuberculosis in the UK' provides historic analysis of epidemiological trends of the disease, discusses its modern management and recommends effective control strategies to minimise the impact of imported tuberculosis into the UK from those born abroad.
Surinder Bakhshi (author) was born in Tanzania and qualified as a doctor at Makerere Medical School in Uganda. He continued his studies in the USA, and Britain, specialising in communicable disease. He retired as a NHS consultant in 2002.
