New Year’s cheer at The Maynard

Published: Tue Jan 06 2009

Whilst many a hotel and restaurant business were suffering over the festive period, Peak District hotel and restaurant The Maynard reports some encouraging signs, suggesting that business owners can work through the recession if they listen to customers.

On New Year’s Eve, which this year proved to be difficult for many hotels and restaurants, The Maynard had its best year ever, with over 200 local villagers turning out to see in the New Year. The main Christmas and Boxing Day events in The Maynard’s restaurant were also packed out, with additional sittings having to be created to meet the extra demand.

Paul Downing, The Maynard’s Director said: "The climate for most businesses is not favourable at the moment, and we’re no exception when it comes to seeing the changing spending patterns of customers. However, it was encouraging to see that we had a significantly better Christmas and New Year than we were expecting in the light of recent economic indicators.

"The secret is knowing our place in the local community, and offering what people want. We listened to people last year and came up with a low-key, informal New Year’s offering. It went down well and this year we refined it and developed the idea further; at just £5 for children and £10 for adults, people once again voted with their feet and made it a night to remember. Similarly, our Christmas and New Year’s restaurant offers this year represented tremendous value for money.

"Word is spreading that no matter how much we all need to adjust prices on food and events, the quality remains high at The Maynard. We will not compromise on quality, so even if you are only having canapés, sandwiches or pie and peas at your event, the same care and quality of ingredients will have gone into the food preparation."
