Dubai Ladies Club Launches HH Sheikha Manal Young Artist Award

Winner of competition to receive AED 50,000 as prize money

[ClickPress, Sat Apr 15 2006] HH Sheikha Manal bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, President of Dubai Ladies Club, today announced her patronage of the Young Artist Award “New Signature” Competition in support of emerging artists in the UAE.

The objective of the contest is to provide opportunities and recognition for aspiring artists by creating a means of recognizing and developing talent presently manifested in UAE’s youth artists.

“The philosophy behind the Competition is to discover and promote the artistic talent of tomorrow. It aims to recognize UAE artists of a relatively young age who have demonstrated exceptional artistic promise within their discipline but have not achieved extensive national exposure,” stated Hala Badri, Dubai Ladies Club Member of the Board and spokesperson for the Young Artist Award Competition.

The contest is open to emerging artists 18 years and older, who are invited to submit one or two sample artworks. A panel of local and international judges, consisting of art critics, recognized artists, and art educators, will be responsible for choosing the winners. The competition will be divided into 3 main categories: 2 Dimensional Artworks, 3 Dimensional Artworks, and New Media.

The winner of the award will receive the sum of AED 50,000 and two additional praiseworthy artists will receive AED 30,000 and AED 20,000. The winner will also get a solo exhibition of his or her work one year after winning the competition.

“The aim of this competition is to create greater awareness of the UAE’s artistic heritage and to specifically promote interest in local, contemporary art,” said Badri.

This competition is also an initiative to encourage sponsorship of the arts by the business sector, and to promote sustainable business-arts partnerships that will, in the long term, benefit the community at large.

“This is an attempt to secure the future development of the arts industry through increased corporate sector involvement while simultaneously offering a unique opportunity for young emerging artists to advance their careers and to gain local and international recognition,” stated Badri.

Registration for the competition opens in May and final submission deadlines are in October, 2006. The selected works will be featured in an exclusive exhibition at the end of year.
