At the popular Whitford Middle School Chess Tournament, held on Saturday, April 2nd in Beaverton, Oregon, it could be said that to do well, one must do great. Because the tournament is held in the heart of Oregon "Chess Country," players are as likely to come up against state championship competition as they are at the state championships themselves. The Delphian School Chess Club took the challenge and sent thirteen of its members into the fray. At the end of the day, nine trophies accompanied them on their long bus ride back home.

For players in kindergarten through twelfth grade, the nearly 200 players in the tournament were divided into United States Chess Federation (USCF) rated and unrated sections. The most experienced players competed in the rated sections. Delphian School senior Min Sup Kim received a "plus score" trophy for above average results in the tough K-12 rated section. Kim and his two teammates, freshman Damian Donze and eighth-grader Chase Von Ach, had collective scores good enough for the third-place trophy in the team category.

Delphi’s eleven-year-old Gabi Ruiz received a trophy for finishing seventh out of 40 players in the K-6 rated section. He won three games and had one draw, with only one loss for the day. Also playing in a rated section for the Delphian School was young Brett Horton. As a second grader playing amongst thirty-seven K-3rd graders, Brett finished ahead of twenty-two of them and was awarded a plus score trophy for his excellent play.

In the K-4th-grade section for unrated players, the Delphian School’s club members made a strong showing. In a field of 39 players, Lukas Ott and Dillon Rivera both brought home trophies. Each of the two fourth graders won four out of their five games and finished fifth and sixth-place respectively. Also in K-4 unrated, Delphi chess club members Lindsay Price and Tanya Eskandari were the top female finishers of the section, and both received trophies for their play. Together with teammates Ott and Rivera, they won the most points as a team in that section and received the trophy for first place as a team.

The Delphian School is an independent, co-educational day and boarding school offering college preparatory, English-as-a-Second-Language and summer programs for elementary through high school students. The Delphian School is licensed to use Applied Scholastics(TM) educational services.
