Alumni to celebrate their graduation with a road trip, with a twist…
What better way to celebrate graduating university than to load up a car with all your best mates and go on a road trip, except this is no normal road trip… This is a thousand mile rally across Europe, all for charity. Beginning in at an unknown location in Europe and following an unknown route (although it has been hinted to travel as far as Kavos in Greece this year), the team of 16 recent graduates will across Europe in an effort to raise money for charity, as well as have a great time!
[ClickPress, Tue May 30 2006] What better way to celebrate completing three years of gruelling university (that’s college for those of across the pond) than to load up a few cars and go on a road trip… Except this is no normal road trip, this is a thousand mile rally across Europe! The event is set to take place over a week from September 3rd onwards, and will travel through various countries on the European continent. The Cannonball name originates from the die-hard adventurer Erwin G “Cannonball” Baker, the greatest cross-country record breaker of them all, setting the record for a cost to cost drive across the US in just 53 ½ hours, averaging over 50mph, in 1933!
The team of 16 recent graduates from various UK universities, including groups from Oxford, Nottingham and Manchester, will be driving throughout the 6 days in order to cover the huge distance across Europe. But of course it wont all be driving, they’ll be the parties at checkpoints, ferry crossings, and naturally it wouldn’t be the Cannonball rally without the Gala at the finish!
However, its not all fun and games, with all money raised going to charity, the group hopes to make a serious contribution to a chosen charity (to be announced). The charity will also benefit from media coverage, with free car decals and logo space available on the vehicles.
The group, calling themselves 30thingsby30 are all aged between 20 and 22, and hope to cover their list of 30 objectives by the time they all reach 30. Some goals are perhaps a little far fetched, such like the Cannonball Rally described here, but some are a little more down to earth, including cooking with Hugh from River Cottage, and par taking in the chasing of the cheese! The groups website, 30thingsby30.com is open for new members, should any of the items on the list excite you (although signups for the Cannonball Rally are now closed), and there is no age limit. (should you still be feeling pretty active after 30!). So why not sign up, and follow the team across Europe!
