Models Direct: Fickle Fashion Could Be Your Key to Modelling Success

In fact, according to Damian O'Connor, Gisele's path to becoming a model should be an inspiration to young people all over the world. O'Connor is Managing Director of one of the largest modelling agencies in the UK, Models Direct.

In the 1990s, it was the age of the super skinny, fragile looking model. Waif-like models like Kate Moss ruled the catwalks. While someone as beautiful and as photogenic as Gisele could work as a model in any era, in this environment, it seemed unlikely that she would go on to become so enormously successful.

But that's the fickle world of fashion coming into play, according to O'Connor.

The end of the decade saw a shift towards a more traditional ideal of beauty. Symmetrical faces, perfect teeth and big, glossy hair was in again. Not only that, but there was a global interest in all things South America. Brazil was the new cool.

This was the moment that Gisele began her modelling career, and the rest is history. She made the cover of Vogue in July 1999, and since then has been the face of more than 20 international brands and been on more than 500 magazine covers.

"There's a great lesson for young people who are thinking of becoming a model," says O'Connor. "You can never really know what's around the corner when it comes to fashion, that's why it's so exciting. So if you really want to pursue a modelling career, just go for it! Whatever you do, don't put yourself off because you think you may not have the right look."
