SEO Domineering Online Marketing as Pay Per Click Loses Its Shine

Although Adwords, Google's pay per click advertising platform, had appeared fairly robust in these difficult economic times it would appear that there is growing shift from paid search to organic search marketing. It is certainly overstating things to predict a decline in the number of businesses using pay per click to get high search engine positions but it would appear that the SEO (search engine optimisation) industry is maturing and presenting itself as a viable alternative not just to pay per click but other forms of marketing.

Andy Maclean, MD of Google advertising agency Open Eye Marketing explains: "I don't believe that the pay per click medium is floundering in fact it's our experience that many businesses are dropping traditional advertising mediums like radio and print in favour of both paid and organic search marketing. This is probably in part due to the credit crunch as small businesses, which of course make up the majority of businesses, strive to make new sales more cost effectively and tangibly than more traditional and expensive advertising forms. Our growth in SEO work has exceeded our growth in pay per click campaigns largely as I think the industry is becoming much more professional and viable to small businesses that historically are very careful with how they spend their money. SEO is now a viable option over other advertising methods."

Google Trends, Google's online keyword trend analysis tool shows that searches for the phrase 'SEO' has risen massively every year for the past 5 years whilst searches for the phrases 'pay per click' and 'Google Adwords' have been static and increasingly slowly respectively.

A significant percentage of UK businesses now count Google Adwords as a valuable sales tool and with organic search engine optimisation being utilised more and more by businesses Google as a vehicle for generating sales will only increase. This together with Google's relatively new local advertising offering, Google Local Business Results means the established print, radio and television advertising mediums will an increasingly precarious future.
