The Independent Presents Diversity In Law – Advice And Information On Careers in Law

Published: Thu Sep 03 2009

The Independent Newspaper is proud to announce it will publish its Diversity in Law Magazine 2009 on Friday September 11th.This glossy edition of the magazine will provide students, parents and career advisers with practical advice and information on the law profession and careers in law in the UK.

Diversity in Law aims to challenge erroneous and negative perceptions of the Law sector, whilst at the same time proving the profession is becoming accessible to audiences that may not have considered legal related careers.

"This edition of Diversity in Law coincides with the 60th Anniversary of legal aid in the UK. The availability of free legal advice to those who could not otherwise afford it has changed many lives in the sixty years since its creation," said The Independent's Anne Giacomantonio. "In this issue, we discover how it came about and why it's still so important."

The magazine's editorial content will focus on a variety of relevant and up-to-date subject areas relating to law, and promoting a wide range of career paths from which to choose. A combination of case studies aim to raise awareness of the benefits of working in the legal profession, and portrays inspirational and enthusiastic role models for our aspiring readers. From September the 11th a digital e-zine version of the magazine will be available at http://www.independentezines.co.uk/index2.php

"We also discuss a few remaining concerns that plague the subject of diversity within the practice of law. What has happened to the glass ceiling? Does a woman have as much chance as a man to become a partner in one of today's leading firms? Is there such a thing as positive discrimination – is it patronising or practical for law firms to deliberately take on people from diverse backgrounds?" continues Anne Giacomantonio. "We also interview The Attorney General, Baroness Scotland, who is unveiling a youth strategy that aims to reintroduce the idea of citizenship to communities. We explain the process of becoming a solicitor and hear from case studies from across the industry about how they got where they are."

Diversity in Law targets prospective and current students who are at school and college. Included within the distribution of the 10,000 copies per issue are secondary schools, Sixth Form Colleges, FE Colleges and private careers companies across the UK. An e-zine (digital magazine) will be hosted on http://www.independentezines.co.uk/index2.php for at least a year from the date of publication. Other student titles from The Independent are also available to view at http://www.independentezines.co.uk
