The Bristol Aztecs record a 41-0 victory over divisional rivals the Chiltern Cheetahs to guarantee a play-off birth in the BAFL post-season
[ClickPress, Mon Jul 10 2006] The Aztecs have played more games than any other team, in BAFL. This home game against the visiting cheetahs, was the 9th game in eleven weeks, and the ‘Tecs were keen to solidify their lead at the top of Division 1A south.
Already 3-5 and guaranteed a playoff spot, the home team started back-up QB Dom Westwood, who showed clear signs that he has developed in the shadows behind 2 year starter Dave Keen. Westwood completed some good passes to Scott Meredith, which were complimented by fine running from the Aztecs stable of backs which includes Tim Stone, Nick Proctor, Matt Barrett, and Guy Hugh-Games. Despite moving the ball well with a mixture of plays, formations, and personnel, the Aztecs were only able to carve out a 6-0 half time lead, resulting from an 8 yard Tim Stone run.
The second half was a different story however, as the Aztecs tightened up on penalties that had cost them yards in the first half, and QB Westwood began to find some rhythm and confidence, hitting Simon Glastonbury, and throwing touchdowns to Scott Meredith and Kev Shelbourne. The Aztec run game stepped up a further gear, with Nick Proctor who ran for 120 yards on 11 carries and a touchdown, and Rookie Guy Hugh-Games who gained 112 yards on 10 carries. In the 4th Quarter Starting QB Dave Keen entered the game, and threw a touchdown to Jamie Wilkinson followed shortly after by a touchdown run in by Rookie Alex Loffstadt with 4 seconds left on the clock to make the final score 41-0.
The Aztec Defense played tough football all day with the tackles well spread throughout the Line, Linebackers, and Defensive backs, with several young players staking claims for increased playing time in future games.
There were some landmarks reached during the game, as Receiver Simon Glastonbury caught his 100th ball for the team, Nick Proctor & Guy Hugh-Games had what will no doubt be the first of many 100 yard rushing games, and Phil ‘Tribune’ Fear recorded his first career interception after 18 years in the game. Aztecs Head Coach Mark Hopkins was pleased with the performance on the day “We were able to try some things we have wanted to take a look at, and give some of the youngsters a chance to step up, and their efforts have given us food for thought, prior to our final game at Ipswich”.
