[ClickPress, Tue Jul 11 2006] "Tire Changing Olympics" will take place on Saturday, July 22 at 4 p.m. in
the Sergeant Bluff High School Auditorium, Sergeant Bluff, Iowa, as part of
the RAGBRAI Expo .
Prizes will include Topeak's popular Joe Blow Twister Digital Pump (which
retails for $84.95) and other bicycle accessories. Several hundred tire
tinkerers are expected to participate.
RAGBRAIR, The Register's Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across IowaR, is an
annual seven-day bicycle ride across the state. Heading into its 34TH year,
RAGBRAI is the longest, largest and oldest touring bicycle ride in the
world. RAGBRAI is limited to 8,500 week-long riders and 1,500 daily riders.
The RAGBRAI Expo
is the annual bicycle trade show that kicks off RAGBRAI. The event features
the newest and latest in bicycling and associated industries. All RAGBRAI
participants, friends, family and community residents are invited. The Expo
is FREE.
Because the "Tire Changing Olympics" tests certain physical abilities which
may vary between different groups of participants, there will be four
categories: junior (13 and younger), senior (60 and older), ladies, and
open. Contestants can only compete in one category. Contestants must be an
official RAGBRAI rider.
Pre-registration at Topeak's Expo Booth is recommended by 2:00 p.m. on the
day of the event.
The event is sponsored by Topeak, internationally known for premier bicycle
accessories including pumps, racks, bags, lights, and tools. Topeak's Joe
Blow Twister pumps will be used for the inflation process.
Contestants will start with inflated tires and will have to fully replace
the inner tubes and pump up to pressure.
Rough Outline on RAGBRAI
RAGBRAI is a bicycle ride - not a race. It started in 1973 as a six-day ride
across the state of Iowa by two Des Moines Register columnists who invited a
few friends along. It is held the last full week in July and hosted by The
Register's front-page cartoonist, Brian Duffy. RAGBRAI is planned and
coordinated by The Des Moines Register.
The RAGBRAI route averages 472 miles. It begins somewhere along Iowa's
western border on the Missouri River and ends along the eastern border on
the Mississippi River. The route is changed each year.
