Smart Grid providers Aztech Associates Inc. and Landis + Gyr have succeeded in keeping certain proprietary information confidential in a recent ruling. On August 24, 2009, they were informed by The Office of the Attorney General of Texas that specific trade information provided to Oncor will be held confidential, and is not to be released publically under section 552.110(b) of the Texas Government Code.

The requested information, dealing with bids to supply equipment for the Smart Grid in Texas, was sought by parties who claimed that all information related to Oncor and TXU must be considered public because it concerned the "possibility of sale of Oncor or TXU Electric Delivery."

Aztech Associates Inc. manufactures the In-Home Display, which shows consumers their energy usage and estimated costs in real-time. This information, including price alerts when required, is shown continuously in a graphical window and is enhanced with the use of audio signals. The Aztech In-Home Display also communicates this information for customers who are hearing-impaired through the sweeping motion and changing colors of its patent-pending light bar, which provides at-a-glance notification of time-of-use periods.

Such data empowers customers to make wise energy decisions, giving them more control over how they use electricity and their monthly bill. Researchers have concluded that the Aztech In-Home Display is more likely to encourage behavioral change than other approaches available, resulting in long term savings of from 10% to 14%.

The Aztech In-Home Display reads electric, gas or water use, and connects wirelessly to most smart meters which are part of the Smart Grid. "The new Smart Grid policies will help America achieve earlier energy independence than anyone imagined,'' said Geoff Salter, CEO of Aztech. This positions the Aztech In-Home Display in homes everywhere as the Face of the Smart Grid.

Aztech distributes its device worldwide, and it has been provided by utilities to customers in Canada and several American states. In Texas, several resellers of electric service have expressed interest in providing the device directly to customers, and it may be widely offered to Texans later this year.
