[ClickPress, Thu Jul 20 2006] Temex of France, a worldwide leader in the field of high-performance time & frequency components and sub-systems, has announced the launch of a wide range of SAW filters for Single Cable Distribution (SCD) Systems. Used for selecting TV channels, Temex SAW filters constitute the key component for these systems.

With the increasing number of set-top-boxes in the home, together with the widespread use of high-end DVR-PVR and high-definition receivers, several cables are needed to connect with the satellite dish on the roof. Expensive installations, potentially ugly and troublesome wiring, and restrictions in apartment buildings will limit the potential development of the satellite reception market.

With the Single Cable Distribution (SCD) Systems promoted by the SCD Consortium, only one, single cable is needed to overcome all these drawbacks. This constitutes a distinct advantage for both the digital entertainment providers — many of whom have already selected this technology — and the home TV distribution market.

Temex SAW Filters are recognized and approved by major chipmakers for satellite reception. High-volume capability and competitive products make Temex the ideal partner for companies seeking an edge in such a highly competitive market.

Temex SCD’s technical advantages are tangible

Temex has designed two sets of filters for this application. Both are compatible with the European Single Cable Distribution standard (Cenelec EN16769) as well as with the Multi-dwelling Unit standard which is currently being studied.

Compared to other filtering technology, and as shown in the table (Filter Set 1 & 2), Temex SAW filters afford the following advantages. First of all, Temex technology offers better frequency selectivity while reducing the size of the units, and while still featuring the mandatory balun function. Second, the technology makes it possible to have up to 12 users on the same, single cable. Finally, a unique wide-band LNB architecture can only be made possible by SAW technology. As can be seen on the block diagram, this implies the simplification of the Ku band section of LNB (a single DRO instead of the traditional pair) and switching matrix (2x4 instead of 4x4). As a result, the total cost of a four-user solution is dramatically reduced. The four-user wide-band solution can be extended to an eight-user solution.

“SAW filter technology is also very well suited to high-volume production. For all these reasons, it will soon be widely used in LNB and switchers,” explains Stéphane Chamaly, Field Applications Engineer at Temex.

Temex SCD is easy to ship and use

The French specialist company has paid attention to the issue of availability, and Temex SAW filters are packaged in a traditional 3x3mm hermetically sealed ceramic pack for high-reliability purposes. The use of a passivation coating on top of the electrodes improves the quality of the SAW filters even further. All filters are RoHS-compliant and available in a fully lead-free version.
