Bristol Kids Offered Chance of Gridiron Glory

Bristol Aztecs American Football Team Giving the opportunity to help children from some of Bristols most deprived areas discover a grear new sport and potentially a lot about themselves as well.

[ClickPress, Wed Jul 26 2006] As hordes of Bristol schoolchildren are released from sweltering classrooms for their holidays, the Bristol Aztecs American Football Club is on hand to offer them a Summer to remember.
Through the Bristol Aztecs Youth Access Project, the door is open for anyone aged 15-19 to become a part of the team. Thanks to generous funding from the Local Network Fund and Quartet Community Foundation, a wide variety of activities are available to try.
As well as joining the top-ranked team in the country, there’s the chance to put on the kit and try playing, or to get involved with the running of the team. There’s also the option to play the non-contact version of the sport, flag football. Within a day, the Aztecs can teach anyone how to play the game, and set up their own flag team, with all the equipment provided. There’s even the opportunity to learn how to be a referee!
Project Coordinator Phil Fear adds: “No matter who you are, there’s a spot in the Youth Access Project for you – league registration and equipment is paid for, thanks to the support of the Local Network Fund. All you have to do is turn up and let our qualified coaches teach you everything you need to know. Head Coach Ben Herod was recently named Youth Coach of the Year, and 16 of his players were selected to Team England in 2005, many of them first year players of the game.”
As well as the chance to star at Youth level, many Youth graduates have gone on to big success as part of the Aztecs adult team. Brothers Tom & Nick Proctor currently star for the Aztecs, both having represented their country at Youth level, and with Tom having won caps as a Great Britain Lion at adult level as well.
The Aztecs are running Summer taster sessions at the moment and are happy to add more schools & youth clubs to their busy schedule. School teachers and youth club leaders can contact Phil at yap@bristolaztecs.co.uk to arrange a session. Those interested in joining the Aztecs at any level can contact Steve Davey on recruitment@bristolaztecs.co.uk
The Bristol Aztecs are the South West’s biggest and best American Football team, competing in National championships every year at Youth and Adult level. The Youth team are currently ranked number 1 in the UK, and are defending Southern Conference champions. Meanwhile, the Adult team have three national championships in the trophy case, including the 2005 Division 1A Championship. Find out more about the Aztecs at www.bristolaztecs.co.uk
