[ClickPress, Mon Aug 14 2006] A brand new book about Newcastle United legend and England hero Alan Shearer features tributes written by a wide cross-section of fans from around the world.
"Wor Al: A Fans' Tribute To Alan Shearer" looks at the Newcastle United legend’s brilliant career through the eyes of fanzine, website and terrace writers. While Alan's goal record speaks for itself, the book gives his many fans the chance to have their own say about their hero.
One of the fans included is Jeff King, a 46-year-old father of two from Cramlington, Northumberland. In the book, Jeff recalls how he felt when Newcastle first signed Alan, and looks back on his most memorable moments. "We have appreciated every one of his efforts and know that no one could have done more for his hometown club," writes Jeff. "Quite simply us Geordies love a number nine, and if he’s local all the better!"
Another contributor is season ticket holder Paul Clarke from Greenside, Tyne and Wear. In his article, chosen to be published from hundreds received, Paul writes about taking his son to Alan's testimonial, and the emotional atmosphere that all present enjoyed. "What can you say about a truly great football legend?" writes Paul. "Big Al personifies what any footballer should aspire to. He is our local hero."
There are also some familiar faces among the contributors, including Viz co-founder Simon Donald and Paralympic gold medallist Stephen Miller. Stephen's article explains how Alan became a personal hero to the Cramlington athlete. "His courage, determination and self-belief have been an inspiration," writes Stephen, "and throughout it all he has maintained his dignity. A true hero." Stephen has won three Paralympic gold medals, and numerous other accolades. A keen writer, Stephen is currently writing his autobiography, which will be published in 2007.
"Wor Al" features contributions from more than 30 fans, many of who read a call for submissions on the publisher's website www.tontopress.com. The book's cover is a striking comic-book style image by original Football Weekly artist Tony O'Donnell.
"It's a unique book," says Stuart Wheatman of Tonto Press, "because it's written by the fans for the fans, so is extremely passionate and enthusiastic, just as you'd expect from Newcastle United supporters."
The publisher is donating 50p from each copy sold to the Alan Shearer Testimonial Fund, benefiting the NSPCC.
"Wor Al: A Fans' Tribute To Alan Shearer" is published by Tonto Press on 14 August and is available from all good bookstores, and from www.tontopress.com, priced £7.99.
