[ClickPress, Fri Aug 18 2006] A new inventory service launched today, ThecontentsSafe (www.thecontentssafe.co.uk), has claimed that over £44 billion worth of Britons’ home contents are at risk through underinsurance. It is estimated that 4.2m British homes (20%) are underinsured by an average of 25% of their home contents value.

Recent statistics have also showed that there are over ¾ million burglaries and over 63,000 total loss fires in Britain every year, making the figure even more concerning . And that doesn’t include flood damage, extreme weather, Acts of God …

But with so many people in Britain being affected by such events every year, could you list every single item in your house along with how much you paid for it and where you bought it from, if you found yourself the victim of such an incident?

ThecontentsSafe is a new innovative home inventory package allowing customers to fully document everything they own, which is then stored on a secure, offline server. Customers can easily add to their inventory, and if disaster does strike, one quick painless phone call will have the complete list sent back to them in no more than 48 hours. The software allows customers to list all possessions with photographs and receipt information, and even details including heirs and beneficiaries in conjunction with a will.

Dean Cornwell, co-founder of ThecontentsSafe, explained what triggered the idea for the business: “Recently a very close friend of mine lost all his possessions in a house fire. When he came to claiming on his insurance, he really struggled to list absolutely everything he owned and, as a result, estimated he lost perhaps £10,000 - despite the fact he was insured. With so many burglaries, fires and even tragedies like the Boscastle flood or Birmingham tornado, the threat to home contents is very real. But without the ability to list everything you own if disaster does strike, Britons are leaving themselves at very high risk of never even replacing those lost goods.”

With the nature of the information stored by the company, security is an absolute priority for ThecontentsSafe. The organisation fully complies with The Data Protection Act (1998), and all saved data is fully encrypted when lists are backed up. Inventories are password protected so they cannot be accessed or edited by anyone except the customer, and all staff are vetted and only have access to the bare minimum amount of information required to fulfil their role. All the information is backed up via three removable data storage devices to ensure maximum security and personal details are not stored anywhere on customers’ lists.

In comparison to the value of the information it holds, ThecontentsSafe is also kind on customers’ wallets. Customers can download the software from www.thecontentssafe.co.uk for £34.99, buy the CD version for £37.99, or a version with paper inventory list templates for £49.99 (includes man hours to upload lists onto the server). The first year’s secure offsite storage is free and customers receive unlimited inventory updates. After year one, customers can choose to continue storing their list with ThecontentsSafe at only £1 per month, or simply choose to store it elsewhere.
