RAIN CLOUD HANGS OVER BRANDON “THE KID” IN HOUSTON

Mechanical problems and poor weather conditions keep NHRA top alcohol funny car driver Brandon "The Kid" Lewis out of eliminations for the first time ever at a divisional event.

[ClickPress, Mon Sep 18 2006] The skies over Houston Raceway Park were full of rain clouds as the South Central division of the Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series tried to make its weekend passes.

For Broken Arrow, Okla. native Brandon “The Kid” Lewis, it must have seemed like one of those clouds was following his top alcohol funny car.

Limited to two qualifying passes by inclement weather, Lewis failed to qualify at a divisional event for the first time in his career. It was a milestone that left him more than disappointed.

“It sucked,” the 20-year-old Lewis said bluntly. “You just kind of scratch your head and think about what you need to do to avoid being in that position again.”

The silver lining for Lewis Racing is that the lightning bolt that struck the Aluminum Tank & Truck Accessories Monte Carlo was diagnosed as worn out springs in the clutch. It’s a problem that the driver is confident crew chief Mike Boyce will have solved in plenty of time for the O’Reilly Fall Nationals at Texas Motorplex next weekend.

“In the long run this is just going to make us run better and stronger because now we know what’s wrong and how to fix it,” Lewis said. “Now we can get back to the way we were working in Vegas, Topeka and Chicago when the team had us in the semifinals.”
