A nice little earner has emerged and homeowners are certainly embracing it. Hundreds of people have joined YourParkingSpace.co.uk, a matchmaking site linking drivers with owners of off-street parking. Driveways and garages in highly desirable locations have been rented out for in excess of £300 a month, whilst at the same time helping to ease the parking shortage particularly evident in London.

[ClickPress, Tue Sep 26 2006] YourParkingSpace.co.uk was launched two months ago, during which time it has emerged as a valid alternative to help find that elusive parking spot. Car parks near to train stations are a rarity and the spread of residents’ parking restrictions has resulted in this idea taking off, in many cases enabling commuters to significantly reduce the time taken to make their journey to work. As headhunter Edward Thomson, 24, who is hoping to rent out his parking space for £80 a month, says, “It’s a mutually beneficial arrangement. Like most motorists in London I’m not the biggest fan of the Congestion Charge and I expect someone living in the Home Counties who wants to avoid paying it will probably end up renting my garage and jumping on the train at Putney to complete the rest of their journey to work.”

Naturally the environmental question has been put forward but the founder of the site, Charles Cridland, believes that this service is in fact beneficial, “By helping commuters to find convenient parking spaces near to train or tube stations public transport will be seen as more convenient. This service helps to reduce the time it takes for people to commute through using public transport which can only be a good thing.” With homeowners earning thousands of pounds a year and many happy parkers there aren’t many complaining.
