[ClickPress, Tue Oct 03 2006] “Road safety is no accident”, the theme for earlier World Health Day, reminds us that road safety does not happen by chance. Achieving and sustaining safety on the roads requires deliberate action from many sectors of society.

• Nearly 1.2 million people are killed every year in road traffic crashes around the world
• About 90 per cent happen in developing countries
• 20 to 50 million more people are seriously injured in such incidents every year
• 6 % of the world's road accident deaths happen in India (while India has only 1 % of the world's road vehicles)
• 1 person dies every 6 minutes; 10 are injured in the same time frame
• Financial losses due to road traffic injuries 2005: 550 bn Rs = 3% of GDP

The key to the successful prevention lies in the commitment of all relevant sectors, public and private -- health, transport, education, finance, police, legislators, manufacturers, foundations and the media -- to make road safety happen. By and large the onus lies on the shoulders of all of us to make sure that the overpowering bulk of traffic runs smoothly and we abide by the “Traffic Laws” to make driving a pleasure. To make the task easier, we have come forward for the cause and provided a platform to discuss, share, and work for the betterment of Indian roads and traffic safety.
