The Fastest Car In The World

In 1997 Andy Green set the current land speed record of earth-bound motor vehicles, in the Thrust SSC, at 763 mph. The latest model in the supersonic car is aiming for 1,000 mph.

Driver Wing Cmdr Andy Green, chief aerodynamicist and Ron Ayres, project director Richard Noble all worked on the Thrust project. All three are now involved in the Bloodhound project. Richard Nobel was the driver of a successful attempt in 1983.

The Bloodhound SSC will be powered by three engines: an 800bhp V12 engine, a hybrid rocket, Eurojet and an EJ200 jet engine The team intends to achieve 800 mph in 2009, 900 mph in 2010 and 1,000 mph in 2011, driving across the dried up lakebed known as Hakskeen Pan, in the Northern Cape of South Africa.

A most important breakthrough has been achieved by the engineers, concerning the problem of keeping the Bloodhound's back end on the ground, as they believe they have now managed to create zero lift. By manipulating the shape of key parts and the position of the car's rear end, the team say they have found the most effective way to deal with the shockwave passing around and under the vehicle as it reaches supersonic speeds.

"A piece of dirt at Mach 1.4 is faster than a bullet," said John Piper, one of Bloodhound’s team. The 42 foot vehicle will cruise at 1.4 times that of sound and smash the existing record.

While the team's position appears full of promise, they still have a lot of work to finish on the large rear fin, the winglets that control lift the jet intake ducts, the air brakes, the aero shape, as well as the air flow into the pencil-shaped car.

There are three main contenders in the race to grab the land-speed title off Britain, which has retained the record, longer than any other country, since the first record was created in 1898. They have held it over twenty-five years, since 1983. Britain is not planning to let go of the title without a major contest.

There are no restrictions on the car design in this particular sport. The North American Eagle team has built a car based on an old military F-104 jet fighter.

The Eagle team has been experimenting for the past 10 years, with limited success. The Eagle is said to have reached between 300 – 400 mph in its last test session.

The leader of the Fossett LSR team was the American Adventurer, Steve Fossett, who died in a light aircraft accident last year. After the wreckage was found, the team went on and completed the car, which is said to be ready to go. It could put up a new record before the Bloodhound SCC does. The Eagle team is now seeking for a new owner/sponsor.

Rosco McGlashan has been working with the Aussie Invader LSR for a number of years. His Aussie Invader 2 was designed on Richard Noble’s Thrust 2 concept.

It was badly damaged when it hit a timing light when travelling at over 500 mph. The latest Aussie Invader 5R is a rocket car that is considered capable of reaching supersonic speeds.
