Georgia defeats Uruguay to become Unofficial Football World Champion
Georgia's national football team defeated title holders Uruguay 2-0 to win the Unofficial Football World Championships.
[ClickPress, Wed Nov 15 2006] Schalke 04 midfielder Levan Kobiashvili was a two-goal hero on Wednesday as Georgia took the Unofficial Football World Championships title from Uruguay in this clash in Tbilisi. Kobiashvili netted a penalty after 39 minutes to give his side the lead, and scored again after 55 minutes to double the advantage. Despite missing star man Shota Arveladze, Klaus Toppmöller's Georgian team held on for a fine 2-0 victory.
The Unofficial Football World Championships (UFWC) is an exciting international football competition contested in a simple boxing-style title system. Winners of title matches become title holders, and move up the rankings. The UFWC title has been contested by almost 100 nations at more than 800 matches spanning over 130 years. UFWC history dates back to 1872, 58 years before the first World Cup.
Georgia's next match will be a UFWC title defence against neighbours Turkey in Tbilisi. The visitors will be favourites, but Turkey has never won a UFWC match, and if Georgia can hold onto the title the fixtures will throw up an intriguing subsequent match against all-time UFWC champion Scotland, the Scots' first UFWC match for almost 20 years.
The Official Website of the Unofficial Football World Championships (http://www.ufwc.co.uk), claiming to be the home of international soccer's real champions, features fixtures and results, plus a wealth of statistics and features.
