Newcastle's Toon Army continue fundraising effort for "Wor Al"

Newcastle United fans are raising money for football legend Alan Shearer's favourite charity by buying a new book.

[ClickPress, Wed Nov 15 2006] Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has praised fans for helping him raise £1.64 million for charity via his testimonial fund. And the big-hearted Toon Army are continuing to support Shearer's chosen charity the NSPCC through the book "Wor Al: A Fans' Tribute To Alan Shearer" (ISBN 0955218330, £7.99). Publisher Tonto Press are donating 50p from every copy sold of the book, which is now available from all good bookshops in the region.

"We held a launch a few weeks ago which raised hundreds for Alan's fund," says Tonto editor Paul Brown. "Now that the book is widely available and fans are snapping it up we're confident that we can raise thousands more for a really good cause."

"Wor Al" looks at Alan's brilliant career through the eyes of his many fans, giving them the chance to have their own say about their hero. It features contributions from more than 30 fans, many of whom read a call for submissions in the Chronicle. Among the contributors are Paralympic gold medallist Stephen Miller and Viz co-founder Simon Donald. The book's cover is a striking comic-book style image by original Football Weekly artist Tony O'Donnell.

The publishers and contributors are hoping "Wor Al" - which features the NSPCC logo - will make a perfect Christmas present for Newcastle fans. "With Newcastle going through a particularly lean period it's nice to remember the great times we enjoyed with Alan up front," says Paul. "So it's great that we can raise money for charity, but importantly it's through a really great book."
