Unknown Buyer Of Worlds Most Expensive Car

A Bugatti car, built in 1936, went for more than $30 million to an unspecified buyer at a Gooding & Company auction, in Santa Monica, California.

Wall Street Journal claimed it as the "most valuable car ever known to have changed hands," while USA Today declared it as "the most expensive used car ever."
Gooding and Company’s president and founder, David Gooding, said the vehicle "Is one of the world's most major and valuable automobiles."

With its low profile, the Bugatti Type 57SC is widely known as being one of the most magnificent cars ever manufactured and the world’s first supercar. With a 200 bhp engine and lightweight construction is has a top speed of 200 kph.

The display car was formed out of magnesium panels that were complicated to weld, so Bugatti employed the car's distinctive riveted seams. While the three production Atlantics were built of weld-able aluminum, the seams were retained as a design feature.

The car's low-slung, pontoon-fender design was the work of Jean Bugatti, son of founder Ettore Bugatti, who blended a mix of aircraft style with the avant-garde tear-drop that is so evocative of the 1930’s. The 57SC Atlantic design was based on the Aerolithe Electron Coupe, a show car built for the 1935 Paris Auto Salon.

Design highlights involve a heavily raked windscreen, and oval doors with kidney-shaped side windows, plus riveted fins.

The Bugatti 57SC was the first of just three Atlantics built, according to Gooding & Company. Rumour has it that it is the Mullin Automotive Museum that has made the purchase. The Atlantic was formerly owned by the trust of the late Dr Peter Williams, a neurosurgeon and car collector.

Whoever the buyer of the world's most valuable car proves to be, they now join fashion designer Ralph Lauren, as being the only two owners of these extremely rare vehicles.

The twenty-nine cars that Lauren lays claim to include the 1929 Blower Bentley, 1930 Mercedes-Benz "Count Trossi" SSK, 1938 Bugatti Type 57SC Atlantic Coupe, 1938 Alfa Romeo 8C 2900 Mille Miglia, 1958 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa, 1961 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa 61 Spyder Fantuzzi, and the 2005 McLaren F1LM.
