Highlights from CRI’s Spring 2007 Semester:

BACK TO THE BASICS
During the last several years, CRI has offered introductory courses in the major religions of the world. This semester we are offering all of our introductory courses. These courses are designed for those who want to learn about the religions of their neighbors – or for those who wish to refresh their knowledge of their own faith.
All courses are $50.

THE AMERICAN POET AS SKEPTIC o FOUR MONDAYS AT 6:30 P.M.
Beginning on March 5, with a course fee of $50, Dr. Don Harrell will discuss how Emily Dickinson and Wallace Stevens were American poets who shared similar religious backgrounds. Neither, however, was able to sustain a faith free of doubt, disbelief, profound skepticism and comic irony. Don Harrell, a popular veteran CRI instructor and a member of St. Bart’s, earned his doctorate in English at Vanderbilt University.

THE HOLOCAUST IN LITERATURE AND FILM
TUESDAY, APRIL 17, AND WEDNESDAY, APRIL 18, AT 6:30 P.M.
Course fee is $50. Instructor Dr. Marc Lee Raphael.
Toni Morrison writes in Beloved, "You who was never there," and wonders how to represent the slave experience for white people and black people who were not there. How can we best represent the Holocaust for those of us who were not there? Elie Wiesel writes frequently that "there is no such thing as a literature of the Holocaust, nor can there be." Is he right? Is it impossible for literature to represent that experience for those who were not in Nazi-occupied Europe from 1939-1945? Marc L Raphael is chair of the Department of Religion at the College of William and Mary. He earned his doctorate at UCLA, and was ordained a rabbi at the Hebrew Union College.
