Betting Update; Chelsea v Wycombe with the bookmakers making Chelsea their 1/8 favourites

Chelsea are currently having one of their worst runs since Mourihno took over the reigns at Stamford Bridge, but it will be one of the biggest shocks in footballing history if they fail to get by Wycombe and make it to the Carling Cup Final.

[ClickPress, Mon Jan 22 2007] Wycombe, from league two, put in a cracking performance two weeks ago at Adams Park to hold the Premiership champions 1-1 and to be fair to them at times they even looked the better side.

Chelsea were rocked by Liverpool in the league at the weekend and without a whole host of regulars (especially in defence) they looked a shadow of the side that has been feared by so many. Due to Terry’s continued absence the Blues’ normally assured backline has been shaky to say the least. This has put an extreme amount of pressure on players like Lampard and Drogba, and in the main they have stepped up to the plate. However, these two can’t carry the team forever and with flops Ballack and Shevchenko still to show any form to justify the mega bucks that Chelsea paid and are paying for they could well be buying some reinforcements this week.

All this said, and no disrespect to them, but they are playing Wycombe Wanderers here and all bets should still point towards Chelsea. Understandably the bookmakers have the home side at prohibitive odds, varying from 1/8 to 1/14. So obviously at these skinny odds there is not a lot of profit in a backing a straight win for the Blues, but with over 25 associated markets there is plenty of other markets to get stuck into.

The correct score betting looks worth an interest to me, and although Chelsea are prone to letting in the odd goal at the moment I think Wycombe will do well to score and the 3-0 at 13/2 and the 4-0 at 15/2 both look worth covering at rewarding odds. Of the other markets Chelsea to win in the handicap betting with a -2 goal deficit at 5/4 also caught the eye.

In the scoring markets, I’m not his greatest fan, but striker Salomon Kalou at 13/8 looks the best option in a game he’s sure to get plenty of chances.
