Study Finds Garlic to Be Effective in Lowering Blood Pressure

Recent research at Australia’s University of Adelaide finds that garlic, specifically garlic extract, can be effective in helping to lower systolic blood pressure. Garlic is believed to aid in the production of nitric oxide (NO) and hydrogen sulphide (H2S), which can help to relax blood vessels.

Though researchers note that garlic should be used as an adjunct to conventional remedies, university doctors recorded an average 10.2mmHg drop in patient blood pressure during the 12 week trial. "This reduction is clinically significant, as a drop in systolic blood pressure by 5 mmHg reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease by 8-20%," the lead researcher noted.

These findings are significant and help to bolster the growing market for garlic supplements. "This isn’t the first study confirming the importance of garlic in maintaining a low blood pressure and a healthy heart, but it does help to support further what experts have believed for a long time. That’s why we include garlic extract in our Blood Pressure Support Complex, and it’s been one of our top sellers," remarked an executive at MyVitaminPlan.com, a producer of condition specific vitamin products. Nationwide, hypertension is on the rise, leading researchers to forecast steady growth rates for garlic extract consumption.
