Betting Update; Super Bowl XLI with Indianapolis as 2/5 favourites

Miami Gardens, Florida, will host the 41st Super Bowl on February 4th, between the Indianapolis Colts and Chicago Bears.

[ClickPress, Thu Feb 01 2007] Indianapolis Colts will begin the game as favourites following a 12-4 regular season and play-off wins against Baltimore Ravens and New England Patriots. This was actually a worse record than the year before when the Colts went 14-2 before losing to Pittsburgh Steelers in their opening play-off match.

The win against Baltimore was most notable for all 15 of the Colts' points coming from the boot of Adam Vinatieri. The former New England Patriot is regarded as the best pressure kicker in NFL history, highlighted by the fact that he has twice won Super Bowls with kicks within the last five seconds of the respective games.

In the AFC Divisional play-off game Indianapolis overcame their nemesis of recent years, New England Patriots, who have eliminated them in two of the previous three seasons. Despite a 21-3 deficit in the second quarter, Peyton Manning finally delivered on his undoubted ability to lead Indy to a 38-34 victory.

Meanwhile, Chicago Bears have been the dominant force in the NFC all year despite huge question marks over their quarterback, Rex Grossman. The Bears scored the most points and conceded the fewest of all the NFC teams and saw off Seattle Seahawks and New Orleans Saints in the post season.
Chicago's defence has been their greatest attribute all season, which began with seven straight victories. But doubts remain over Grossman's ability, who was ranked the 24th best quarterback during the regular season, and only one of his rivals threw more than his tally of 20 interceptions over the 16-game schedule.

Last year's Super Bowl saw the lowest points total (31) in 31 years since Super Bowl IX in 1975. The forthcoming game has generally been priced up around over or under 48.5 points, and of the 40 World Championship games so far, 25 of them have produced fewer than this mark.
Indianapolis start as around seven point favourites in the handicap betting and recent games suggest that they may struggle to cover this mark. In four of the last five Super Bowls, the favourites on the day have failed to win by the pre-game spread and overall are 21-17-2.
