In honor of National Literacy Month, Zen Rabbit Baking Company has committed to donating 10% of all Gratitude Cookie and Zen Crunch product sales to literacy organizations working to improve education around the world.

"We encourage Gratitude Cookie eaters to think about something they’re grateful for as they’re eating, and having the ability to read and comprehend what you read is certainly something to be grateful for," says Lori Saitz, Chief Executive Rabbit. "Personally, I cannot imagine how difficult not being able to read must be, especially in today’s technologically based society."

According to ProLiteracy Worldwide almost 800 million adults are illiterate. Two-thirds of them are women. In the U.S. alone, 30 million people over age 16 – or 14% of the country's adult population – don’t read well enough to understand a newspaper story written at the eighth grade level or fill out a job application. Many studies have linked illiteracy to increased rates of crime, poor health, poverty, teen pregnancy, and unemployment.

Zen Rabbit is best known for producing The Gratitude Cookie™, a cross between a butter and a sugar cookie, so named for promoting the concept of a grateful appreciation chain from gift giver through recipient and cookie eater. The company also makes Zen Crunch™, a granola/nut brittle snack that has been featured as Snack of the Day on Rachael Ray’s daytime talk show.
