Balcony Media to Launch New National Design Magazine, FORM: pioneering design
Publication Will Provide Forum for Emerging Talent Across Spectrum of Design Disciplines
[ClickPress, Mon Feb 12 2007] Balcony Media, Inc., publishers of art and architecture books and LA Architect magazine, announces that it will launch a new national trade publication, FORM: pioneering design, in June 2007.
With an emphasis on modern design, FORM will fill a unique niche featuring emerging talents and their brilliant, precedent-setting work in the areas of architecture, interior, landscape, furniture and product design, and materials and technology. FORM’s aim is to showcase high-concept projects that provoke and inspire. For example, technology coverage will highlight how the manufacturing and design disciplines are bridged by electronic media, molding, milling and weaving. Readable, intelligent and visually stunning, the magazine will present design with exuberance as well as substance.
“Having published art, architecture and design for nearly 15 years, I am constantly reminded of the delight great design can bring to our lives, and am moved by what a challenge it is to produce it,” says Ann Gray, FAIA, CEO/Publisher of Balcony Media. “It inspires me personally and I am always in pursuit of new ways to celebrate it.”
Assisting in this pursuit is current LA Architect Editor in Chief Jennifer Caterino, who will continue in her role and spearhead the editorial direction of FORM. Caterino, who earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism at New York University, has spent nearly 10 years as an editor, writer and marketing professional, specializing in the architecture, construction and legal industries. Under her guidance, readers will be informed and entertained by well-known thought leaders, as well as a cadre of regional writers at the front lines.
Responsible for the magazine’s clear, minimalist graphics is award-winning firm Studio Fuse (www.studiofuse.biz).
FORM magazine succeeds LA Architect, a successful regional magazine that garnered substantial acclaim in the seven years it was published by Balcony Media. FORM’s audience will be architects and professional designers in urban centers including Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, Austin and Miami. FORM will be published bimonthly and available on newsstands nationally through independent and wholesale distributors.
Balcony Media was established in 1994 to publish art, architecture and design books emphasizing the cultural and historical aspects of design. Recent titles include IRON: Erecting the Walt Disney Concert Hall, The Big Idea: Criticality and Practice in Contemporary Architecture, and Descanso. In 2000, Balcony Media was tapped by the Los Angeles chapter of the American Institute of Architects to publish LA Architect. Under the tutelage of Balcony Media, the magazine has gone on to win a number of awards including a Maggie for Best Trade Publication.
Publisher Ann Gray, herself an architect, practiced architecture professionally for 15 years prior to forming Balcony Media. Gray was studio architect at Paramount Pictures responsible for planning, architecture and interiors. The design work under her administration has been recognized by Progressive Architecture, Interiors and TIME magazines. Gray is a Trustee of the California Preservation Foundation and chairs the AIA/California Council Design Awards Committee. She has been recognized by the National Association of Women Business Owners for her entrepreneurial endeavors.
