A young Berkshire student begins karting after seeing the fitness drive by Tony Blair in conjuction with the 2012 Olympics in London.
[ClickPress, Tue Feb 27 2007] As Tyson Phillips lay on the Sofa of his family home in Berkshire watching his beloved Tottenham Hotspur score a forth goal against a lacklustre Bolton team, all his mother could think was he should be outside playing sport not inside watching it! As luck would have it, Tyson’s school were arranging a karting trip to a circuit close to their home and Mrs Phillips signed her son straight up. “I saw a news piece about the 2012 Olympics and how they were endeavouring to boost kids’ fitness by the time the event rolled around and as Tyson isn’t the most active of teenagers it really got me thinking. When I saw his school had arranged a trip to the Reading Circuit with Paintball Guide Karting, I saw it as an ideal way for him to get some exercise”, explains Mrs Phillips as she places her son’s karting trophy on the mantlepiece.
Tyson’s school chose the Reading circuit on the advice of the Paintball Guide Karting sales consultants and a knowledge that it is generally regarded as one of the best in the region. “After hearing the circuit was over 370 metres in length and seeing some pictures of the track on the internet, it’s safe to say all the kids were all extremely excited about the trip”, says Nigel Glow, Headmaster at Tyson’s school, “and this excitement only heightened when the arrived and saw the track up close. It had all sorts of hair pins and chicanes which looked extremely tricky. I’m glad I wasn’t taking part!” continues Glow sincerely.
The kids in Tyson’s class ended up competing in a Grand Prix style event that certainly had their adrenaline levels soaring, “it was unbelievable,” enthuses Tyson, “it was just like an F1 event on TV! We had a quick practice to get a feel for the karts and then it was straight into it with qualifying heats and a Grand Final for best 8 racers! I started forth on the grid and managed to get myself into first place by the time the chequered flag was waved. It was awesome!”
Karting in the Berkshire area is a very popular pursuit and the standard of circuits is extremely high. Marketing Director for Paintball Guide Karting Robert Goodliffe has seen this from a first hand perspective, “we offer karting tracks the length and breadth of the country and many around the Reading and Berkshire area. We have seen a boom in the number of tracks we offer and their standard has improved exponentially. Our Reading track is undoubtedly one of our finest and it is almost always fully booked because its high standards”, explains Goodliffe.
Tyson himself is certainly glad of the existence of the Reading Karting Circuit, as is his mother. “He is much more active now and he talks about karting all the time. He can’t wait to go back again. Now they just need to introduce karting as a sport at the 2012 Olympics because I think I’ve got a potential Gold Medalist on my hands!”
