Unlike many parts of India Goa has a mainly Roman Catholic population due to being colonized by the Portuguese back in 1510. As such the birth of Jesus is celebrated in churches and homes around the town with many places decorated with Christmas trees, flashing flights and a glittering array of other decorations.

Midnight mass also more commonly known as Missa de Galo will be taking place in churches everywhere and visitors can see some of the best churches in the Old Goa area close to the state capital of Panaji. Highlights include the 400 year old Basilica of Bom Jesus which contains the relics of Goa’s patron saint, St. Francis Xavier.

After the service many visitors choose to head down to the many parties that run along the beaches. People using cheap Goa hotels can attend a number of events that will be run by the main resorts and clubs in the area.

On Christmas day visitors can either opt for a traditional turkey dinner or go for something more adventurous with many Goan dishes specially prepared for Christmas. Highlights include Sorpatel which is a spicy pork and liver dish or Bebinca, a pudding made from coconut milk, sugar, flour and clarified butter.

Lek Boonlert, marketing head at DirectRooms.com commented: "Christmas is one of the busiest times in Goa as tourists head for some sunshine over the holidays. People planning on visiting will need to book rooms well ahead of travel dates to be guaranteed availability."
