Online Volunteering: Small Business Owner Experiences the Rewards

When self-employed multimedia creator Dan Tombs was contacted by a Canadian charity about volunteering via the Internet, he did not realize the rewards and ease of helping from home -- a way of volunteering he had not known about.

[ClickPress, Thu Mar 22 2007] When self-employed multimedia creator Dan Tombs was contacted by a Canadian charity about volunteering via the Internet, he did not realize the rewards and ease of helping from home -- a way of volunteering he had not known about.

"It [online volunteering] was actually more fulfilling than any of the work that I did for my clients in the past.... "said Tombs. ".... it was reaching out and helping somebody else and it was to me ... I just felt like I was doing something right when I was doing it and it felt really good," added Tombs.

Tombs, a multimedia designer who originally honed his craft in California, lives in a small rural community on the Canadian prairies (where satellite is his only option for a high speed Internet connection). For about the last six months he has been volunteering online as a video producer/editor with Winnipeg-based charitable organization Macdonald Youth Services (MYS).

"He has produced some stunning videos for our organization -- and all within a very short time frame," said Randy Tyler, Macdonald Youth Services' Online Volunteer Program Developer. "And talk about committed to a project: he has uploaded over three Gigabyte files for us at 2:00 AM", continued Tyler.

Based on the type of experience he had with MYS, Tombs thinks that anyone with skills in this area can contribute via online volunteering.

"This is too easy." said Tombs "... anybody can do this, anybody that's got ... any talent in the graphic arts or video or audio can be a contributor ...", added Tombs.
