Atlas Air Reduces Communication Costs and Drives Employee Efficiency Using MobileAware
Mobile scheduling solution saves Atlas Air significant communication costs by providing flight crews with mobile access to constantly changing travel information
[ClickPress, Wed Mar 28 2007] MobileAware, the world’s leading provider of Mobile Service Infrastructure (MSI), today announced that Atlas Air Worldwide Holdings, Inc. (Nasdaq: AAWW), a global provider of air cargo charter services, has reduced its wireless communication costs by 10% through the use of MobileAware technology in a wireless crew scheduling and notification system. The solution, which was designed and deployed within six months, enables Atlas Air’s globally dispersed flight personnel to access up-to-the-minute travel information, including flight schedules, accommodation and aircraft equipment, from an HTC TyTN quad band mobile device. Additionally, flight crews can communicate in real-time with Atlas Air’s Joint Notification Desk via a wireless instant message-based solution, enabling a faster and easier flow of communications, further reducing communication costs between remote employees and the company’s headquarters.
Atlas Air employs approximately 800 flight personnel around the world and is principally involved in the leasing of its cargo aircraft to other airlines on an Aircraft, Crew, Maintenance and Insurance (ACMI) contract basis. While the company previously advised its flight crews on their schedules and accommodations through telephone-based updates from its Joint Notification Desk located in New York, the company and its flight personnel found this process both cumbersome and costly, often causing flight delays which in turn impacted on the company’s profitability.
Atlas Air selected MobileAware’s ExpressQ to develop a mobile solution that would provide flight crews with easy access to schedule information from any global location, would minimize the bandwidth costs of communicating schedule updates and would ultimately improve crew productivity by eliminating flight delays associated with crew notifications. Flight personnel are now able to obtain 15-day views of their travel schedule, which includes arrival and departure times, aircraft equipment, accommodation information and scheduled time off. ExpressQ enables schedule changes to be temporarily stored when flight crews are out of coverage and then forwarded when they return to in-coverage areas. In addition, ExpressQ supports interactive communication between flight personnel and Atlas Air’s Joint Notification Desk when both sides are connected.
“Communication breakdowns in any organization can cause inefficiencies and loss of revenue and none more so than in the aviation business,” said Jim Barrecchia, senior director of business systems delivery, Atlas Air Worldwide Holdings. “MobileAware has provided us with a mobile solution that has improved employee efficiency through the elimination of communication bottlenecks, reduces communication costs and reduces our exposure to flight delays – all of which directly affect the profitability of our business. What’s more, we now have a solid mobile infrastructure in place that not only allows us to easily add new features to our existing mobile solution, but also enables us to roll out mobile services to other parts of the organization, such as to our loadmasters and aircraft mechanics.”
“Atlas Air represents a growing number of enterprises that are realizing the business benefits of deploying MobileAware technology to improve the productivity of their mobile workers,” commented Kevin McCloskey, MobileAware’s chief executive officer. “The speed from design to deployment stands as yet another testament to MobileAware’s expertise in delivering proven mobile business solutions to the travel industry. Moreover, Atlas Air’s plans to launch additional mobile data services highlight the superior benefits of MobileAware’s software infrastructure over archaic bespoke wireless applications.”
