IT Vision reveals months wasted by schools on ICT admin

[ClickPress, Wed Mar 28 2007] New research from asset management specialists IT Vision shows that British schools are spending up to three months on painstaking audits – the ICT explosion has led to a bureaucratic nightmare in the education sector.

As the Government announces another increase in education spending, British schools have more equipment than ever, which means more information to log. According to a new survey by asset management specialists IT Vision, the average secondary school spends up to three months completing its annual audit, while a primary school takes up to three weeks.

Tim Roots, Managing Director of IT Vision, commented: “Schools now have so much ICT equipment that they’re stuck in admin hell. The average secondary school has some 350 PCs but only one ICT Manager, who often takes on teaching duties as well. An equivalent-sized business in the commercial sector would employ four people to do this job. Too many schools are still logging data manually on spreadsheets – this takes up an enormous amount of time and is totally unnecessary because there is software available to do the work automatically.”

IT Vision’s innovative asset management software Parago automatically scans PCs every 24 hours, collecting all hardware and software assets into one central source. This makes auditing far easier and enables schools to track exactly what equipment they are using regularly and what is surplus to requirements.

IT Vision research shows that the average secondary school runs some 67 different types of licensed software but up to 50% of the computer programs are unused.

Tim Roots, Managing Director of IT Vision, commented: “It’s inevitable that not all of software will be used regularly. But it’s essential to have a system in place to track assets and then schools can make considered decisions on what they do and don’t need. This can free up resources to spend on the most useful hardware and software.”

IT Vision currently has more than 1000 schools subscribed to Parago, automatically recording asset information from more than 100,000 PCs. The new research was carried out by IT Vision in 100 schools across the UK.

About IT Vision
Since its initial formation in 2004 IT Vision has become the market leader in web-based ICT asset discovery and software licensing.

The founders of IT Vision originally identified a requirement whilst working alongside a number of government agencies, schools and local authorities. Recognising that the Government has invested millions in IT, it became apparent that records were absent or difficult to audit. Current asset management solutions were either too complicated to use or expensive to justify against cost.

The first system to be released by IT Vision was Parago®, the first web-based Asset Discovery and Software Licensing system. Product development was directly influenced by the education institutions and authorities on a step by step basis. This unique relationship with current and future clients continues today and is central to IT Vision’s success.
