The two day Silmugi Festival is a celebration by the residents of Borbon district for the good harvest and is also an opportunity for the people to pay homage to the patron saint of Cebu, the Santo Nino de Cebu (Holy Child of Cebu).

To mark the occasion the streets are filled with people dressed in the most detailed and creative costumes that incorporate many different colours and materials. Local bands and musicians provide the music and the people then parade through the town singing and dancing in a real carnival like atmosphere.

People visiting the island and staying in a hotel Cebu can go and watch all of the activities and processions for free. Visitors may also like to try some of the many local dishes being freshly prepared at stalls throughout the event.

The festival runs from 19th to 20th January 2011 and during the proceedings a special competition will take place to find Borbon’s most beautiful resident with the crowning of Miss Silmugi 2011.

Lek Boonlert, marketing head at DirectRooms.com commented: "Hundreds of extra visitors are expected for the festival which is always a lively occasion. Hotel rooms will be noticing the extra trade and so booking early should be a prerequisite for anyone heading to the island."
