Nigerian Politician Jimi Agbaje Turns To Text Messaging For Micro Donations
Jimi Agbaje, a new generation Nigerian politician who is campaigning to become the Nigeria’s Lagos State Governor, has turned to text messaging to allow potential donors to make micro donations to his campaign.
[ClickPress, Wed Apr 04 2007] Jimi Agbaje recently commissioned the first Web 2.0 social networking political site in Africa, www.jimiagbaje.com, for his political campaign. Inspired by the recent Web 2.0 campaign web sites launched by United States Presidential candidates like Hillary Clinton, John Edwards, and Barack Obama, the site allows his supporters to create profiles, network, and create their own campaigns on-line. The site has met critical acclaim from all over the world.
The website has now been ecommerce enabled with a mobile phone ringtone download shop. Ringtones can be purchased by texting a special code to a premium shortcode. Every time a ringtone is bought a micro donation is made to the campaign.
In addition, the campaign team is using the same technology to establish where the Jimi Agbaje strongholds are, and using this information to plan where resources should be made available in the last days of the campaign. Campaigning for the gubernatorial election stops 48 hours before the elections are due to hold on Saturday 14th April 2007.
The technology to power the text messaging is provided by MobileXcetera (www.mobilexcetera.com), a local mobile solutions provider.
"The campaign taglines of 'New Thinking. New Lagos' have encouraged us to use various New Media to reach the electorate" said Ade Atobatele, CEO of Tridas Net Ltd, the local Nigerian information consultancy that is managing technology for the campaign.
"With the fragmented media environment it's important to realise that there are no silver bullets that can be used to reach the voters. It now takes a integrated media approach to get to the 'Silent Majority'” he added.
Jimi Agbaje recently become the world's first politician to integrate Bluetooth proximity marketing into his campaign by using MobZap Bluetooth Beamers (www.mobzap.com) to rig out several buses that roam Lagos streets everyday, beaming out clips of Jimi's manifesto and catchy ring tones.
