[ClickPress, Fri Apr 06 2007] The UK Independence Party will be fighting for seats in May in eleven of the North East’s Council Chambers. UKIP Candidates are standing in Chester-le-Street, Darlington, Sedgefield, Gateshead, Alnwick, Sunderland, North and South Tyneside, Stockton on Tees, Redcar in Cleveland and Hartlepool.

The May 2007 elections have seen the best turn out of local Council candidates so far in the North East. There is a mix of first timers who are testing the waters in their home towns and more experienced campaigners who are fighting their second or even third local election campaign. The UKIP Candidate in Whitley Bay, Mr Allan Pond, was an (Independent) candidate in the last North Tyneside Mayoral Elections and the UKIP Candidate for Harlow Green, Mr Jim Batty, is a former (Labour) Deputy Mayor of Gateshead.

The UK Independence Party won its first Council seat in the North East in Hartlepool in May 2006. The successful candidate, now Councillor, Stephen Allison won the St.Hilda ward in Hartlepool, fighting off challenges from 2 Independents (one of them the sitting Councillor), Labour and Lib-Dem Candidates.

Councillor Allison said today” My election was a first in the North East but will not be the last” Councillor Allison continued “In May 2004 we came with a handful of votes of winning three seat in Hartlepool, loosing one only after two re-counts. We have high hopes in several seats but regardless of the outcome just the fact that we are standing in eleven different local authority areas shows that UKIP continues to gain strength in the region”

The UK Independence Party Leader Nigel Farage MEP will be lending his support to the campaign with a whistle stop tour of the Region on Wednesday 26th April culminating in a public meeting in the Swallow Hotel in Stockton in the evening.

Councillor Allison is looking forward to welcoming Nigel Farage MEP to the region. “Nigel is an inspirational speaker and it is always a delight to hear him” said Councillor Allison “As leader of UKIP and an MEP he is always in demand, to such a point that we are having to restrict the event to ticket holders only”.

Anyone who would like to apply for a ticket to attend the meeting with Nigel Farage can contact Councillor Allison on 07900 803052.
