Cincom Smalltalk Engineers to Present at Smalltalk Solutions

Learn From the Experts on How and Why to Use Cincom Smalltalk

[ClickPress, Thu Apr 26 2007] Cincom Smalltalk engineers will present at the upcoming Smalltalk Solutions Conference presented with this year’s LinuxWorld and IT360° Conference in Toronto, Canada, April 30 – May 2, 2007.

A few of the Cincom Smalltalk Engineers presenting at Smalltalk Solutions include:

Travis Griggs – “CairoProject”
The CairoGraphics Project (www.cairographics.org/) is an OpenDesktop project that is a 2D graphics library with support for multiple output devices. It’s gaining momentum rapidly as a cross platform way of doing modern anti-aliased graphics for multiple backends. Bindings exist for many different languages and toolsets, including GTK+, Ruby, and Python. This presentation is an overview of the language binding for Smalltalk, specifically VisualWorks, the Smalltalk toolset for building instantly portable server, Web-based, and client-server applications. Attendees will leave with a general understanding of the general drawing model, how it’s mapped in Smalltalk, as well as some of the techniques used to interface with the library.

Martin Kobetic – “SSL and X.509 Security in Smalltalk”
Kobetic will go through the process of securing a web server using SSL protocol and X.509 Certificates. Also to be discussed: how to use certificates (as well as why they are necessary) with SSL protocol to achieve
various security objectives. Everything will be discussed in the context of live demonstrations using VisualWorks.

Michael Lucas-Smith – “Interfacing with C”
Since C was first invented, other programming languages have found it necessary to interface to C libraries. Smalltalk is no different and yet after more than 27 years there is still a struggle to adequately interface with it. Lucas-Smith will show how the different Smalltalk implementations try to solve the C interface conundrum and how other languages try to solve the same problem. The discussion will delve into the many tips and tricks that have been learned over the years when interfacing Smalltalk with C across different Smalltalk implementations. Other programming interfaces to other languages such as COM and Cincom’s .NET connect will be explored as well. Finally, the presentation will entail how Smalltalk could better interface with C in the coming years and answer the question: why is C still relevant in modern computing?

Arden Thomas – “Application Frameworks: an Experience Report”
Thomas will discuss the experience of choosing and using an application framework for Smalltalk based development. Factors such as what an application framework is, what it should do, and some criteria for selection are all involved in this discussion.

James Robertson – “Cincom Smalltalk Roadmap”
Robertson will be describing the roadmap for the Cincom Smalltalk product Suite - VisualWorks and ObjectStudio 8, which allows developers of native Windows® applications to create innovative solutions that model complex business processes. He will explain where the suite is, where it's been, and where it's headed. This should be of interest to all Smalltalkers, whether they use Cincom Smalltalk now or not - and it will also be of interest to software developers and managers who may be thinking of examining Smalltalk.
