Great Spirits results from IWSC

The International Wine and Spirit Competition today announce in London,the first results of their 2007 medal winners on selected categories of spirits.

[ClickPress, Mon May 21 2007] In great spirits, the International Wine and Spirit Competition (IWSC) announced today at the London Wine & Spirit Trade Fair, the First results of their 2007 medal winners for the categories of Cognac, Armagnac, Calvados and whiskies from Scotland & Ireland.

“This really is a very happy announcement for us today,” said Frances Horder, Competition Director of the IWSC.
“We had more entrants than ever in the spirit categories, with over 340 whiskies from across the length and breadth of Scotland, plus exciting new whiskies from Ireland and some surprise entries from France. Across the group over 100 have attained Gold or Gold ‘Best in Class’ with classic brands such as Courvoisier, Janneau, Laphroaig, Talisker, Glenfiddich, Dalwhinnie and Lagavulin scooping more than one of these each whilst perhaps less predictably, supermarkets Tesco and Sainsbury own label whiskies were also awarded Golds. All entries were of course tasted blind with samples pre-poured in numbered glasses to ensure anonymity.

“We open the Fair today on our stand (T54) with tutored tastings on both whisky and cognac and hope that we might be enjoying a dram with some of our triumphant entrants.”

Richard Paterson, Master Blender and IWSC spirits judge spoke of this year’s competition;
“The quality was once again of a very high standard, but what became apparent this year was the exceptional standard of the blended Scotch whiskies, particularly in the aged entries of which we had several dozen. This was both encouraging and refreshing. It is hoped this will be continued in the years to come.”

Other judges spoke of the "elegance and balance” that so many of the entries exhibited,
commending the diversity of the aged cognacs, armagnacs and whiskies. Permutations on “a delight to find this subtlety, complexity and length of finish” were found across many tasting notes with the flights commended for being limited to small groups of products to ensure there was no palate fatigue.

Concluding, Horder said;
“Whilst we have over 650 spirits still to assess later in the year, we can already foresee immense competition for the V & S Distiller of the Year Trophy, an award made to the top distiller with the best overall marks and a wide range of styles. 2007 is certainly an outstanding year for this category.”
