Innovative play equipment helps Amersham go greener

Amersham Town Council’s latest play area attracted an appreciative crowd of parents and children when the Mayor, Cllr. Howard Maitland-Jones, officially launched the new play area at Hervines Park

[ClickPress, Fri May 25 2007] Amersham Town Council’s latest play area attracted an appreciative crowd of parents and children when the Mayor, Cllr. Howard Maitland-Jones, officially launched the new play area at Hervines Park

The Council originally invited four companies to submit innovative designs for the new play equipment and stipulated that total costs must not exceed £60,000. Members of the selection panel included those with young children and Parks Superintendent Mark Richardson used his experience of his young family to put forward a subjective view.

The winning scheme was designed and installed by playground experts Monster Play Systems and includes exciting equipment such as the Rock ‘n Cross seesaw, which was recently featured on the BBC1 evening news and multi play units for toddlers and juniors which contain 100% recycled materials. Amersham Town Council is keen to promote the recycled aspect of the scheme and delighted town clerk Des Knowles commented, “We chose Monster Play’s design because it was fresh and imaginative. As well as addressing our environmental concerns, the design also offered the benefit of using recycled materials. Another huge plus point which really caught everyone’s eye, was the unique Rock ‘n Cross, which combines a multi-rider seesaw with an overhead climbing experience. The whole design is safe but challenging and appeals to children of all ages.”

Des Knowles added, “As soon as the play area was operational, we received positive unsolicited feedback from several parents saying that the new play area was very different and enjoyed by their children, which is extremely gratifying and makes all our efforts worthwhile.”
