Local football club, SA Stainash, win fair play award

Over sixty players, supporters and friends of SA Stainash, along with special guest for the evening, former Tottenham Hotspur manager Peter Shreeves, were present on Friday night (25 May 2007) at the club's end of season celebration to hear that the team had won the East Berkshire Football League's fair play trophy in the club's first season.

[ClickPress, Wed May 30 2007] Those present heard Peter Shreeves speak about his time as a player, coach and manager, telling stories of well known footballers and his experiences of life in the game. He commented on the noticeable good spirit among the group, and promised to come along to a pre-season training session over the summer.

SA Stainash was started up last year by members of the Staines corps of the Salvation Army, a christian church based in Woodthorpe Rd, Ashford and the team's kit of red, yellow and blue reflect the colours of the famous Salvation Army flag.

Awards were presented to recognise the top goalscorer, and the coaches' and players' players of the season and every player went home with a trophy, and it was announced that SA Stainash had won the East Berkshire Football League's fair play trophy for the 2006/07 season.

Joint coach Ray Oliver commented "it was great to have Peter as our guest for the evening and his insights into the professional game were fascinating. To win the fair play award for not just our division but the whole league capped a great end to our first season and really proved what this team is all about - lots of the guys have brought friends into a christian atmosphere and everyone in the league know what we're about, having the league recognise that we play the game the right way is a great thing for the team and the church".
