Caravan owners using their caravan as their main or only residence could be liable for a council tax bill according to new reports.
[ClickPress, Wed May 30 2007] Caravan owners using their caravan as their main or only residence could be liable for a council tax bill according to new reports.
“Many caravanners mistakenly believe that they are exempt from paying council tax if they leave their caravan for a few weeks or months due to the closure of caravan sites out of season,” said Cover4Caravans director, Richard Burgess. “This is a belief which some district councils are trying hard to change.”
East Lindsey District Council is one of the first to tackle the contentious issue and has launched a campaign to raise awareness amongst caravan owners about their council tax liability. The authority has wanted caravan owners within the district that they could even face a backdated bill for council tax if they have no other permanent residence during the year.
Properties across Lincolnshire are regularly inspected and people using static caravans and motor homes are being asked to check whether they are paying the correct levels of council tax in order to tackle confusion over the issue.
Luckily for caravanners, insuring their caravans need not be so confusing. Mike Stammers of Cover4Caravans says that caravanners are increasingly taking up insurance policies due to the simplicity of the process, saying “It’s fairly simple to do; it’s not a particularly complicated policy and the documentation is quite simple.”
In order to clear up confusion over council tax payments for caravans, owners are being advised to contact their local authority. Even if council tax has been paid recently, caravan owners may still be issued with back dated payment demands to cover previous periods of permanent residence within the vehicle.
