LOCAL SCHOOL HITS HEADLINES

Able Magazine (UK) looks into the MOVE programme, a new programme that is being integrated into many schools, designed to help young disabled people with mobility problems.

[ClickPress, Fri Jun 01 2007] The Mayfield School in Cumbria is making amazing progress with disabled children who have mobility problems. By incorporating a programme known as MOVE into the school it has improved the mobility, health and confidence of many young disabled people.

The MOVE programme is a system of movements and actions designed to be integrated into everyday life to improve mobility and give disabled children an improved quality of life. The Mayfield School has excelled in this area, providing an environment where disabled children can learn basic skills like sitting, standing and walking. Irrespective of age or ability the Mayfield School offers each child the opportunity to take part in the programme.

Able Magazine talks to Karen Al-Khina, whose daughter Ami has cerebral palsy and attends the Mayfield School. Ami started the MOVE programme six years ago, when she began she had very limited mobility and could not walk independently, now however she is out of her wheelchair and using a walker to get around. They even made a family trip to Disneyland, Florida where Ami didn’t even need to use her buggy and led her family round the whole of the Disney theme park.

The Mayfield School in Cumbria is just one example of the MOVE programme being utilised, as it is now used in 139 schools across the UK, it has helped improve the mobility of over 2,000 severely disabled children and has hopes to expand even further for the future.
