International Wine & Spirit Competition unveils results at Vinexpo
The prestigious International Wine & Spirit Competition will be announcing it's winning wines from across a selection of European countries at next week's trade exhibition in Bordeaux; Vinexpo.
[ClickPress, Wed Jun 13 2007] As the world of wine gathers in Bordeaux next week, to taste, discuss and enjoy some of the best of the industry’s offerings, so the prestigious International Wine & Spirit Competition (IWSC) will seize the occasion to announce the results of their 2007 entries from France; Italy; Greece; Port and Sherry.
These results are previewed here.
At the Fair, Competition Director for the IWSC, Frances Horder will announce the shortlists for the Wine producer awards for each of these countries, at a trade & press luncheon on Tuesday 19th, in the company of IWSC Vice Presidents May de Lencquesaing, Peter Sichel and Chris Hancock.
Speaking from IWSC Headquarters in Surrey, Frances Horder said;
“The IWSC works with a great number of highly-regarded judges from around the world who apply rigorous standards in their blind tasting and assessment of all entries. In addition top winners are sent off to an analytical laboratory for independent chemical / microbiological analysis and marks are deducted if products show any signs of instability. We set this high standard to ensure that any medal won in the IWSC carries true international value and respect.
“The panels had a tough time judging these categories this year: France had some stunning results across Champagne; Bordeaux; Rhone; and many other regions. Whilst gaining only eight Golds, the plethora of Silver Best in Class (well over 100) demonstrates the sheer volume of fine wines produced by this country. No other nation has won so many ‘Best in Class’ awards.
All the pizzazz you could want from Italy was here from Veneto’s stunning Amarone wines, classic Chiantis, fine & delicate Prosecco through to the bold & warming wines of Sicily.
Greece offered both indigenous and noble varieties, reflecting the diverse mix of traditional and modern approach from wineries such as Domaine Katsaros Chardonnay 2005, which was described by one judge as having the aroma of ‘peaches and cream with touches of nutmeg and the mouthfilling taste of ripe lemons & white nectarines’, whilst from Goumenissa, the Xynomavro/Negoska was described as having ‘black hues. Notes of smoke, cloves mingled with ripe blackberries.’
The fortified section opened all of our eyes, with Port winning an astonishing 13 Golds; 25 Silver (Best in Class) plus a further 38 Silvers and in the Sherry category winners run the full gamut of styles from ‘fabulous concentration and burnished amber tawny’ of a ‘mouth-filing’ Oloroso to the ‘treacle toffee nose’ of a PX, through to the light, bright citrus notes of young Fino”.
