The Secrets to Sparking A Child's Motivation

Rekindling a child's lost enthusiasm is essential to avoiding depression and academic underachievement, and fortunately, there are many strategies to counteract de-motivating factors.

[ClickPress, Fri Jun 15 2007] “When is it my turn to go?!?” pleaded three-year-old Michael, beaming with excitement as he enviously watched the school bus pick up other neighborhood children.

His turn finally came at age six— but it wasn’t long before his enthusiasm took a hit.

Michael is intellectually gifted, but his schoolwork didn’t challenge him. When he sought out his own challenges, he got in trouble and was put on a “behavior plan.” This, along with other de-motivating factors, took a toll on Michael’s eagerness to learn.

Luckily for children like Michael, there are ways to counteract those factors. In A Love for Learning: Motivation and the Gifted Child, Carol Strip Whitney, Ph.D., and Gretchen Hirsch describe strategies to spark and cultivate motivation for lifelong learning. The authors discuss reasons for lack of enthusiasm, including physical reasons, emotional reasons, social reasons, and school reasons. They then supply ways to create the four C’s needed to counteract issues like these—challenge, commitment, control, and compassion.

Discover how a successful classroom works, and what it takes to keep children like Michael jumping up and down to get on the school bus. Later in school, Michael wrote a poem, saying “I’m a seventh grade boy whose dream is music.” Find out how his motivation was set ablaze to keep his dream alive.
