[ClickPress, Fri Jun 15 2007] On The June 13th Edition Of "The Cedric Muhammad and Black Coffee Program," Cedric Muhammad, Former General Manager of the hip hop’s Wu-Tang Management Analyzes Media Reports On Brand Asset Group, the joint venture between Warner Music Group and hip hop artist 50 Cent manager, Chris Lighty.
"I was there when many of these kinds of discussions were taking place between Wu-Tang Clan, Steve Rifkind, SRC, and Loud/RCA Records. And I negotiated the Pepsi/Mountain Dew endorsement deal for the Clan. I see both sides to this deal. On one hand, it's absoolutely brilliant that Chris Lighty is taking advantage of the brand, network and infrastructure of a major record label to increase the scale of his operations. But I also wonder why, he could not have formed a venture like this partnering with other Black Hip-Hop and R&B managers, talent, and executives in the music industry. Wall St., angel investors, and the world of private equity would certainly have backed a venture like this. Cutting the major labels in on manager and artist income is risky business if not unnecessary."
