to mobile children’s hairdressing in the UK.

Getting children to go to a traditional hairdressers, or barbers, can
prove nightmarish for parents, as mother of four and CCB owner Sandra
Mole knows only too well: "My experience was that the salons just
didn’t seem to have the time to coax the children into the barber’s
chair and not much patience with those that won’t sit still!"

Based in Corby, Northamptonshire, the benchmark of the Chopping Bus experience is that children who visit are guaranteed to feel welcome, safe and happy.

There is a real demand for Sandra’s unique business proposition – a
genuinely child-friendly bus, parked locally, where there are plenty of
toys on the bottom deck for those waiting for a haircut and a kitchen
selling hot and cold drinks.

Upstairs, there are hairdressers trained especially to work with
children, a variety of handmade gowns for the salon clients to wear and
organic produce used to protect young scalps.

Every last detail has been considered – even down to lack of mirrors on
the upper ‘chopping’ deck, as many children in conventional
hairdressers can feel most upset when they can in the opposite mirror
see a pair of buzzing clippers coming towards their heads.

Sandra explains: “Some children will come along three or four times and
have a bit more chopped off every time – we will not pin children down
to get the job done as this will only scare them. Instead, we aim to
build up a relationship of trust with each child and will stop when
they tell us. It’s absolutely amazing – we have had children that came
on petrified of clippers and, after a couple of trips, will have a
Number 1 all over! On the website there is a story all about coming on
the bus which can be read to prepare your children before even coming
to look around.”

The bus is one of the only stockists of the popular Nitty Gritty
treatments and combs in Northamptonshire and also stocks organic and
handmade solid shampoos.

Currently parked up in different areas of Corby all week, the bus
should never be more than a few minutes walk away and at weekends it
travels around to fun days and other towns in the region.

Sandra also has plans in the future to expand her concept as, so far,
the demand for the bus has proven to be far in excess of supply for
one, extremely busy, mother of four, who turned a concept into a unique
and successful reality.
