Rev. Joseph Lowery To Speak At Grand Opening Of Newest
Youth center aims to shine a positive light on a troubled community
[ClickPress, Thu Jun 21 2007] The timing could not be better for civil rights leader and non-violence activist, Dr. Joseph Lowery to visit Clayton County to speak to community members during the grand-opening of a new after school/summer-camp youth activity center in Forest Park. The center, one of 24 LITE House programs, will be dedicated to Clayton County resident and activist, Felicia Davis, LITE House executive director, Melvin Morris, announced today.
“It will be a time to pause and celebrate our collective efforts to lift as we climb, and highlight the quiet accomplishments our youth have made over the years," says Morris.
For over eight years, Morris and Davis have mentored at-risk youth in low-income neighborhoods in Clayton County. In addition to offering recreational and educational activities, the child have taken trips to the mountains, beach, the United Nations in New York, and even traveled to Johannesburg South Africa to participate in a UN World Summit.
“It is an honor to have the Forest Park center dedicated to me,” says Davis, a partner with Women Flying High, LLC. “As of this year, all of the original students have now graduated high school and were accepted to college. The last will go to Howard in the fall. What a success rate!”
The LITE House program is a special amenity for children ages 5-18 available to the residents of participating apartment communities. The unique, free of charge, after school program strives to provide safe and supportive activities, foster positive self-esteem, build socialization skills, and develop greater cultural awareness. The Educational Coordinator and trained staff work in conjunction with parents and each child's school to ensure personalized year-round educational and enrichment opportunities. LITE House is a 501 ( c ) 3, non-profit organization. For more information visit www.litehousekids.org.
