What are so-called "carbon offset credits" really worth to ordinary holiday makers?
[ClickPress, Fri Jun 29 2007] In its next show due to premiere on Wednesday 4th July, TV programme "The Caravan Channel" questions the real value of so-called "carbon offset credits", which are being enthusiastically sold by many commercial businesses.
After recording the programme's Green Viewpoint slot, producer and presenter Chris Gosling said that his research would make him very wary about buying credits to offset his own travel. "It looks as if people who really are committed to working for our world, like Greenpeace, dismiss most of the carbon offset schemes as "accounting tricks that do little to stop global warming".
"An investigation by The Financial Times also raised many concerns about carbon offset schemes, and they reported a senior HSBC bank environment advisor commenting that "the police, the fraud squad, and trading standards need to be looking at this, otherwise people will lose faith it it"," Gosling added.
He pointed out that most caravan owners, motorhome users and campers are already among the greenest holidaymakers, and that green issues are important to them. "Many of us work at reducing our own carbon footprint in a real way, right here and right now. But buying trees for someone else to own and plant, which may or may not work in the real world, isn't automatically "the right thing to do" - if everyone in the world reduced their carbon output by just a little, we'd see a massive change".
