WHAT WILL GORDON BROWN DO FOR DISABLED PEOPLE?

Able Magazine talks to key figures in the world of disability to find out what they think a Gordon Brown government will mean for disabled people.

[ClickPress, Tue Jul 17 2007] As the new Prime Minister settles into Number 10 and prepares to deal with the many issues facing him, Able Magazine recognises that very little has been mentioned in the national press on his policies for disabled people. We decided to approach some of the key figures in the world of disability to ask them what they feel a Gordon Brown government will mean for disabled people.

Some hope that Gordon Browns close affiliation with disability will give him a perspective that few other politicians have, however the concerns highlighted cover a wide spectrum of issues that need to be addressed, from David Morris, Senior Policy Advisor to the Mayor of London, who has concerns that disability equality will slip off the government’s agenda, to Imelda Redmond, Chief Executive of Carer’s UK, requesting a review of carers’ benefits.

“Can we expect him to identify as a disabled person and relate to the issues which many of us disabled people face?”, asks Simone Aspis, Parliamentary and Campaigns Worker, United Kingdom Council of Disabled People. These are just some of the issues and questions being raised following Brown’s appointment as Prime Minister. Will he make a positive change to the lives of disabled people and help to achieve a society that promotes the human rights of all?
